This masterclass will be a hands-on, project-based approach to learning business intelligence.
Your role will be that of a business analyst designing and end to end business intelligence solution from the start. Source data will be provided in the form of excel and CVS-Text files including business sales transactions, products, customers, salespeople, and location information.
We will begin this journey with an introduction to Power BI Desktop, stepping thru each stage of the business intelligence workflow including connecting to data, transforming the data, designing a data model and extracting and interrogating our data by introducing a functional language called DAX(Dynamic Analysis Expressions) employed for both measures and calculated columns.
Our solution will include a dynamic interactive report and Dashboard set up for sharing and collaboration with others via Power BI Service.
The session is intended for anyone interested in getting started with Power B.I., the most widely recognized desktop business intelligence solution Microsoft offers. Closely related to excel, Power BI is a natural progression in the Office 365 Suite of Products with wide appeal to students, business analysts, planners, and CEO’s. Attendees will become familiar with the basics of getting data, designing a data model then visualizing and interrogating their data in Power BI Desktop. Attendees should consider this session as a supplement to their relevant real-world experience or a new learning opportunity to validate their own analytical skills. The session will cover the essentials for getting started with Power BI and how to share and collaborate on the same.

Power BI Consulting, Development and Training (Imitategood)
I started my consulting business in 2018 with all the best of intentions driving me to pursue something purposeful while adding value along the way. During a sales position interview a couple years back, the President, who was interviewing me, asked “what in my sales approach differentiated me from others?” Right then and there, I had the opportunity to share my Power BI work and I had prepared on a competitor. I was demonstrating how I would approach a sales call armed with augmented analytics with a highly sophisticated visual impact. I think it hit me and the President at the same time, here was a person with a solution and armed with the facts about gaining a competitive advantage through technology. Technology that was free to get started with. Although I did not get that specific job, I did have my eyes opened to a new career and was subsequently hired as that companies Power BI Consultant.
I am from Western Mass having spent fifteen years of my career with LEGO Toys. I started off as the low man on the totem pole, the sales planner. Over time and four promotions later I was running the sales planning team with responsibilities of POS (point of sale) reporting, forecasting, account presentations and co-managing the MRP process as Chairman MRP Committee. I was voted MVP of Sales during my tenure at LEGO.
I managed the sales programming staff and help develop the laptop planning system for our national accounts team.
When I was invited back to LEGO, after working on the West Coast, I came back to New England as a consultant for LEGO to implement a new demand planning system. After which, I became the Category Manager for LEGO-Target Corporation with more access to big data and analytical insights. I helped implement the first chain-based store segmentation process aided greatly by data analytics and data modeling tools such as Power Pivot.
Before I left LEGO, I managed programmers in India developing a new promotional performance tracking and reporting system which aimed at providing ROI insights to all the various promotional mechanics.
Fact-based selling had been my initial calling and that is what I have been doing for a few decades, always using analytics to help obtain KPI objectives. I have a unique background as my career has been a mixture of managing analytics, selling consumer goods, and now helping companies implement Power BI.
Now that Power BI has arrived as a self-service business intelligence solution, I believe the time is right to help introduce interested people and organizations to this visionary product.
Over the past two years I have been learning everything I could about Power BI. I have completed full course series by instructors (Microsoft MVP’s, Enterprise DNA & Udemy (Maven Analytics, Randy Minder, Dan We). I have used my professional Power BI skills with multiple data sources, SQL Data warehouse, SSMS, DAX Studio, web-scraping, etc. I am a Gold Contributor for the Power BI user group community.
I was born in Hartford Connecticut and grew up in New England. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland in Business logistics and my MBA from Western New England University. I began my consulting business last year and my website is www.imitategood.com.
